Driving in Bulgaria

Roads are in very bad condition especially at the end of winter. From November to April the important falls of snow make the traffic difficult. It is recommended to drive slowly because of the many potholes.

To drive in Bulgaria you will have to buy a road-fund licence at the border post and to stick it on the windscreen. Prices are 4EUR per week, 9EUR per month and 51EUR per year.

At the border all vehicles have to be disinfected. Expenses for disinfection are payable in euros for foreign vehicles but vehicles of the EEC are exempted.

Make sure your green card of insurance is marked “BG” in order to be really covered in the case of an accident in Bulgaria. Failing this, you can subscribe at the border post to a third part liability insurance valid in Bulgaria.

Avoid driving by night: bad condition of roads, presence of carts and animals on the roadway, bad lighting, …

Theft and car smuggling is a national sport in Bulgaria. Take the maximum of precautions by parking in supervised car parks.

Anti-theft bolts to the wheels and a laying-up system of the vehicle (alarm + canes of wheel) are warmly recommended. Do not leave any important document in the vehicle (driving licence, insurance…).
