Driving in Latvia

Latvia has one of the highest rate of accidents in Europe. It is mainly due to the road network condition of which the quality varies a lot: large roads quite good but minor roads which are often not tarred. The road network is limited by a little section connecting Riga to Jurmala.

As the others Baltic countries Latvia accepts since 2003 insurance policies and the “green card” of European countries. The international driving licence is thus not necessary because the European one is enough.

Local drivers’ behaviour is not always respectful of the highway code with a tendency to speed excesses and hazardous passing. Be careful especially on small roads.

In winter the majority of roads are cleared of snow but watch out for fog and ice. It can be until -20° in Letvia! Snow tires are obligatory in winter.

Headlights have to be lighted all the day in any season.

The police is particularly strict especially for alcohol. Road blocks and breathalysers are frequent with immediate payment of the fine and heavy sanctions in the case of infringement.

In the event of a collision the police intervention is almost systematic. Vehicles must not be moved before Police arrives except if they present a danger for the others users.
