Driving in Mexico

Mexican roads’ condition is rather hazardous especially on the secondary road network. Deformations of the bitumen and potholes are common.

Prefer roads and motorways with tolls (« cuotas ») which are patrolled rather than “free” roads.

Remember that whoever drives in Mexico does it often without driving licence, without insurance, but as a whole, the Mexican way of driving is not that bad.

It is recommended to be careful by night especially on the secondary network: bad lights, battered roadway, alcoholised drivers and animals on roads. A 4×4 vehicle is necessary for every trip in mountain or in North desert regions.

In the case of a car hire check insurance policy is comprehensive and valid as well as the redemption of excess. If not, an accident can lead to 3 days in prison until a magistrate determines who is guilty.

In Mexico it is mandatory to respect the alternation days for traffic in order to fight against pollution. Vehicles registered abroad cannot circulate every Friday.
