Except inside the country, the road network is dense and well maintained. Australia counts 1,600km of motorways of which some with tolls.

Driving is on the left side: take time to be used to drive with the gear lever and be vigilant at crossroads and after a break. In roundabouts the priority is to the right. Australian people drive rather cool and slowly.
Distances are long and roads are tiring: think to have rests and do not over estimate yourself.
In the Northern Territory (the Adelaide-Darwin road) some road trains and big lorries circulate to a high speed and this is very dangerous to pass them considering their important length (50m!).
If you wish to go to the bush, it is better to do it via a specialized agency with a guide and a convoy of two 4×4 vehicles.
Be vigilant when driving at dawn and at dusk.
Many animals are likely to cross the road (kangaroos, emus, rodents). Respect speed limits even on long straight roads.
