Driving in New Zealand

The road network is in very good condition with a very good signalisation. However it offers very few motorways.

Driving is on the left side: take time to accustom you to the gear lever and be vigilant at crossroads and after a break. The priority is to the right.

An international driving licence with your national licence is necessary to drive in New Zealand. People from New Zealand have a rather calm and cordial driving like the English people.

Roads are not crowded allowing a rather cool driving. The speed limit 100km/h on large roads is comfortable. However many parts of the country are hilly and mountainous and your journey time will be longer.

Attention: the police is very strict with speed excesses and bad behaviours in general.

They organise frequently road blocks at the exit of cities and motorways.

In some more isolated areas, roads are not tarred but they remain well maintained. Slow down.
