Driving in Cuba

Motorways and main roads are generally in good condition. We can drive on them at a good speed since they are often empty, considering the little of Cubans who have got a car. Only problem on the “autopista” : the total lack of roadsign!

Secondary roads can be in very bad condition, even to be tracks only for 4×4 vehicles. Inform you about it. Cuban fleet of cars is very decayed that is not contributing to the general safety on roads. Without talking about the way of driving rather “latin”.

Keep an eye on your petrol tank: gas stations are sometimes 100 km away from each other.

It is misadvised to drive by night especially on the secondary road network: no light, battered roadway, various obstacles on the road…

The subscription of a comprehensive insurance and a redemption of excess is highly recommended. Check this point on your car hire agreement.

Do not hesitate to give money to kids who propose you to keep an eye on your car by night. Do not pay in advance of course.

In the case of a crash with serious consequences, you could be retained and even go to prison until the legal procedure expiry which can last a long time.
