Driving in Guadeloupe and in Martinique Islands

Hiring a car is the best solution to discover these two islands of the West Indies. In high season it is recommended to book a long time in advance.

Coating of the road and roadsign (to French standards) are in quite good condition on the majority of the roads. On the secondary road network, roadway condition can be damaged especially after a big storm. Pay attention to potholes!

West Indian people drive rather fast and as roads are very sinuous you will have to be careful.

Traffic jams are common on the outskirts of big cities and it is better to avoid driving between 8am and 5pm.

Automatic speed machines are frequent and spread on the whole territory.

Be careful when driving by night. Many bicycles without any light and pedestrians cross the roadway.

In Guadeloupe you could find many cows on the roadside: picturesque but be careful!
