Driving in Mauritius

Main road network is quite good but roadsign is sometimes fanciful. To follow your way it is better to put your trust in the road number and to have a good map.

Driving on the right-hand side of the road is troubling and the gear lever requires a time of adaptation. Be particularly vigilant during the first kilometres.

Mauritians people have rather an aggressive driving and do not often indicate.

When you see an arm from the right car window, be more cautious because this means the intention to turn right or left.

Buses are particularly aggressive. They drive very fast on narrow roads trying to pass their rivals.

If you have to drive by night, be more vigilant because there is no (or few) light on roads and in villages.

Roads are invaded with pedestrians and cyclists with hazardous behaviour. Pay particularly attention to zebra crossings.
