Driving in Austria

Austrian drivers are as a whole polite and respectful of the highway code and the road network is in good condition.

In order to drive on Austrian motorways it is first necessary to buy a road-fund licence to stick on the windscreen. Its validity can be 10 days, 2 months or 1 year. It is recommended to stop at the border to get it because fines are expensive. Otherwise it is available also in post offices and tobacconist’s. The road-fund licence does not exempt you to pay at some tolls and tunnels.

Traffic lights are specific. A blinking green light means the light is going to become red that enables close vehicles to go but the others must prepare to stop.

The yellow light with the lighted red one means the transition to the green is imminent.

European Union citizens reported in Austria for an infringement to the highway code will have to pay the fine on the spot.

In the case of a breakdown it is obligatory to wear a fluorescent jacket if you are on the roadway.
