Driving in Finland

The road network is in quite good condition but there are not too many motorways (only around 700km). This is due to a very strict environmental protection policy. Note that the further worldwide motorway to the North is in Finland (between Kemi and Tornio). Many roads are tarred with very bad adherence when raining or snowing.

On isolated Finnish roads you are likely to do strange encounters. Reindeers and mooses cross often roads especially at dusk. Their passages zones are indicated with roadsign. Be careful when you come near. Collision with a 600kg moose can be brutal…In the event of an accident call immediately the police (tel: 10022 everywhere in Finland).

Be careful to respect the highway code. Finnish police has not really a sense of humour and it is better to avoid any negotiation. Your car condition will be carefully controlled and they will be uncompromising with you (lighting, tyres, …). Finnish particularity: there is no point on driving licences. For inhabitants, the fines are calculated considering their incomes. Finland holds therefore the record of the highest fine in the world. The concerned one was a local industrialist and the fine was 170,000 euros!
