Driving in France

With more than 9,000km of motorways and almost 30,000km of national roads, the road network in France is developed and well-kept. Motorways are not free and have the reputation to be expensive.

Fixed speed machines are clearly indicated few meters before. We can find their place on Internet including on governmental sites.

French people do not use very often their indicator. Added to an intense use of mobile phones, it is recommended to be highly vigilant especially downtown.

It is better to avoid driving in France during summer holidays: Saturdays of the beginning and of the end of each month are particularly crowded in July and August.

Attention to the right of way from the right: without contrary roadsign the right priority is valid even if a secondary road comes to the right of a main road.

On crossroads the already engaged cars have the right of way.

On the ring road of Paris the speed limit is 80km/h. In the built-up area, the speed limit is 50km/h as soon as there is the roadsign indicating you are entering downtown (white road sign with a red border).
