Driving in Germany

Germany, it is a little bit the motorway kingdom!

Historically it is the first country to develop a road network which is nowadays a reference with its 11,000km perfectly maintained …and free.

Unless otherwise stated, speed on motorways is free with an advised speed of 130km/h.

On limited parts (around 30% of the network) controls are frequent and harsh.

Attention not to drive too long on the left lane because speeds around 160km/h and more are common! Always keep an eye on what happens ahead : it is not rare to have to slow down briskly because of a temporary speed limit.

On the “Autobahn” you will find big gas stations opened 24 hours a day and offering all comfort services: shops, food, catering, …

On a zebra crossing, pedestrians have always the right of way even if they are not yet engaged on the roadway. Be vigilant because they think you will stop.

As for paying car parks, some places reserved for women “frauenparkplätze” are just next to the exit and checkouts.
