Driving in Island

The road network along the island is tarred at 75% but ir is fully opened only from April to September. Outside cities, the secondary network presents often roads with stones. Because of stone projections it is necessary to use them with caution especially when meeting an other vehicle.

Mountain roads are often sinuous and there is not always a floor marking. Extreme caution required.

A 4WD vehicle is better to discover Iceland because it is the only mean to reach dirt tracks in summer.

Guideposts are rare and written in Icelandic. Prepare carefully your journey. Pay attention to sheep on roads! Driving in Reykjavik is surprisingly easy because parking places are numerous.
