Driving in Ireland

Irish roads are full of charm but it is better not to be in a hurry! The network counts mainly small roads of a departmental size (indicated “R”) and often narrow.

Driving is on the left-hand side and roads solicit a lot the gear lever.

In rural areas Irish people drive quite fast and brake late when there is a vehicle forward. Be careful because after a bend you can meet a kine in the middle of the road or a tractor.

Irish people are very polite when driving. It is rare to hear horns and it is common to salute the vehicle we meet. Fine!

Roadsigns are generally indicated in English. In Gaeltacht region and in Connemara they can be in Gaelic!

Surprising: you will have to convert miles and kilometres!North Ireland belongs to the Great Britain and uses miles whereas the South is independent and uses kilometres. This can be sometimes troubling : speedometer in miles, roadsign in kilometres, …
