Driving in Portugal

Portugal is the European champion of mortality caused by road accidents. Its roads are the most dangerous in Europe and a permanent vigilance is highly recommended.

Main reasons of this bloodshed are linked to the extreme behaviours of drivers and to the bad equipments of the road network : incoherence in road maintenance and road sign, wrong marking on the floor…

Expect everything including the worse: speed excess, non respect of continuous lines on the floor, absence of traffic lights, passing in bend or at the top of a hill… The authorities spent time to react and a feeling of relative impunity seems to encourage the road hogs to change nothing with their behaviour. Alcohol is another problem which Portugal finally seems to take seriously.

National roads IP4 and IP5 with 3 lanes are the most dangerous in Portugal. Badly signposted and without rails of safety, Portuguese roads are sadly famous for the high number of accidents often very serious. Things are better since few years but be careful.

Portugal is a marvelous country with warm-hearted inhabitants. However do not forget to be extremely careful on the roads, in order to make sure to enjoy its charms…
