Driving in Sweden

Swedish are sensitized with the questions of road safety and are very respectful with others users.

A too much “latin” driving will be badly perceived and quickly sanctioned by the police. The network is of good quality and motorways are free.

Sweden is made up to 54% of forests and accidents implying local fauna are frequent. Pay attention to the many panels which indicate areas likely to be crossed by wild animals especially at dawn and at dusk.

The Swedish regulation on alcohol when driving is the most severe of Europe with Norway. A simple glass can put you out of the law. It is better to abstain completely especially as fines are high.

If you visit Sweden in winter, it is better to have a minimum experience of driving on snow. The best is to anticipate and to be gentle. Do not overestimate yourself: go into the traffic in a fluent way and enlarge your safety distances.

As in Norway secondary roads are not maintained but the snow is rammed down and recovered with gravels. Snow tires are obligatory during the winter season.
