Driving in Switzerland

Switzerland offers a dense and in good condition road network and marvellous mountain landscapes.

To use Swiss motorways (green panels), you will have to buy an annual road-fund licence when you enter the territory and this even if you drive only few hours. They are available at customs (around 40CHF).

Driving in Switzerland is easy. Road sign is clear and distances are quite short. Even mountain roads are generally well maintained.

Note that some Swiss ski stations are not accessible directly by car: it is necessary to park and to use shuttles or ski lifts. It is the case of Braunwald, Murren, Wengen and Zermatt.

As a whole, Swiss drivers are disciplined and respectful of the highway code. Controls are frequent and the police is very strict in the case of an infringement. Car parks condition is generally good whereas decayed cars can be spotted by the police.
