Driving in Turkey

Turkey offers a large road network and well maintained connecting cities and main tourist areas. Motorways are with tolls. 2 main express roads connect Turkey to Europe borders: the E80 and the E90.

Road signs and the highway code are similar to those of European countries.

However local driving still remains aggressive and not always respectful of the highway code.

Be careful with traffic hours of the evening (from 5pm to 8pm). Drivers are in a hurry to go back home and often forget every prudence. On minor roads pay attention to the cattle which crosses and to agricultural vehicles without light.

In Istanbul traffic jams are huge and cause many accidents implying pedestrians.

In the case of a collision pay attention to intermediaries which can propose their services.

In Turkey any accident leading to a death is automatically followed by an immediate imprisonment of the driver while waiting for the decision of the justice.
